Stand by me

So where are you today on the hope-pessimism scale? From 1 to 10, 10 being highest, where would you put yourself?

Today is usually called Blue Monday as it has been calculated that people generally feel lowest statistically at this time, due to factors like the time lapse since Christmas, the time to the next pay check, the time of year, the weather, debts, etc. – AND it’s Monday!

And this year there’s been lots around to contribute to a lack of a sense of well-being due to the economic slump. It’s like there’s a collective sense of gloom.

It is important to respect that that is very much how people might be feeling. It can seem very real, like this is how the world is.

Except that it isn’t.

It might be how you or I might be feeling right now. Our view of the world comes from the particular set of coloured glasses you or I might be wearing right now. It’s important to make the distinction. Even when you are down, it is important to remember that that is what’s happening, that’s what I am making it mean.

Which gives me power because then I can change it, potentially, if I work on it.

So, instead of saying to yourself, or myself, “it is bad to day”, say “I am feeling bad today” and recognise that that is what you are creating. Awareness is the first step to change (see this e-book for more on this process of taking charge and making the change). Once we notice what we are doing, then we can begin to make the change.

And, to support you along the way, remember that Obama is being inaugurated tomorrow, 20th January. How about that for a positive shift that is taking place?

Right in the middle of apparent gloom and doom, things are always going on that contradict the experience. We just have to shift our awareness to notice it and tap into it.

And here are two inspiring videos that came to me recently. Watch and reflect.

Notice especially that in one of them, he knows all about picking himself up!

Are you going to finish strong?

And the other is a true international effort. This is after all universal, one we all share.

Stand by me

May you be of good cheer today.
